Having won everything, these players missed out on the biggest trophy in the world. One player on this list might not be a part after tonight’s final between Real Madrid and Juventus. Some surprising names on the list:

10 PATRICK VIEIRA 

Vieira made a total of 76 Champions League appearances with three different clubs – Arsenal, Juventus and Inter Milan. He was so unlucky that when he left the Gooners in 2005, they reached the final the next year. Similaraly departing the January befor Inter lifted the cup in 2010. He was not eligible for the medal.

9  FABIO CANNAVARO 

One of the all-time greats for Italy, Cannavaro won the Ballon D’or in 2006. Yet despite playing for Parma during the peak of their European powers in the late 1990s, as well as Inter, Juventus and Real Madrid subsequently, a Champions League medal is missing from the World Cup winner’s collection.

8  CESC

With 96 appearances in the competition, the former Barcelona and Arsenal man has never lifted the Champions League trophy. He will look tom make 100 appearances as Chelsea are back in the Champions League next season. But the question is will he be able to lift the trophy with the blues?

7   VAN NISTELROOY

With 56 goals in his Champions League career, Ruud is the highest scoring player never to have won the Champions League. With a better goals to match ratio than Cristiano, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United man has never won the trophy.

6  PAVEL  

The Czech Republic man was a part of the Juventus team that reached the final in 2003 but were edged out by AC Milan.

PSV, Inter, Barcelona, Madrid and Milan are among the forward’s former teams, but the man who was named the best player in the world in 1997 and 2002 was never able to scoop European club ’s top prize. The Brizilian forward was unlucky with all his former teams.

4  LILIAN THURAM

Like Nedved, Thuram was also a part of the team that reached the 2003 final, but the only difference is that he played the match. But he was so unlucky that after keeping Milan at bay by doing his job at right back, he saw his side lose on penalties.

3 MICHAEL

Ballack was so unlucky he reached the finals not once but twice but still failed to lift the cup. In 2008 he was forced to watch on as John Terry and Nicolas Anelka’s missed spot-kicks handed the trophy to Manchester United. The German at least scored his own penalty that night.

2   IBRAHIMOVIC

The current Manchester United striker holds the unwanted record of making the most Champions League appearances (119) without ever lifting the trophy. Now 35 and recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, the Swede may not get another chance.

1  GIANLUIGI

The Italian veteran has won all other major club trophies but he has failed to get his hands on the biggest trophy in Europe. The Juventus man has been on the wrong side two times as he watched his team lose.
