Copa America 2016: Ecuador vs Haiti Match Preview

Ecuador lock horns against Haiti in the Centenario Copa America Group B encounter at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford on Sunday.

Ecuador started their Copa America campaign with a goaless draw against Brazil in their opening fixture and are yet to clinch their first win as they were held to a 2-2 draw against Peru in their next game.

Brazil and Peru sit at the first and second spot of Group B with 4 points each, followed by Ecudor at the third spot with 2 points. Haiti are yet to open their account as they suffered two consecutive defeats against Peru and Brazil.

Ecuador hold their Copa America destiny in their own hands as a win against Haiti in Saturday’s clash can take them one step closer to seal a spot in the quarter-finals.

Should the clash between Brazil and Peru end in a victory for either of the sides and if Ecuador beats Haiti, Ecuador will go through to the quarter-final of the 2016 Copa America. However, a draw between Brazil and Peru will then see the team with the better goal difference progress, if Ecuador beats Haiti.

Ecuador’s anticipated advance to the knock-out stage will depend on how things shape up in another Group B clash between Brazil and Peru on Saturday. Ecuador need to clinch a victory against Haiti and they will advance to the knock-out stage only if the game between Peru and Brazil ends in a victory for either of the sides.

On the contrary, a draw between Peru and Brazil will make things even more exciting and the teams with a better goal difference will progress to the quarter-finals of Centenario Copa America 2016.

“We have to win to qualify, we have the chance and everything depends on us,’’ said Ecuador captain Walter Ayovi.

“It’s not easy to score two goals, but you have to work towards that possibility. We want to qualify.

“We have a great team and know what we should do, we are speaking positively and hopefully that will help us.

“Haiti is a team that has interesting aspects, we know they will be a tough opponent.

“We hope to create our own opportunity and be the team we were against Peru, he concluded.

An already eliminated side Haiti have nothing to lose against Ecuador and it would be interesting to see if they can pull up a shocker to restrict Ecuador’s advance to the next stage.
