Premier League 2019-20: All About The New ‘Head-To-Head’ Rule

Published on:

The 2018-19 Premier League season was probably the most action-packed season witnessed after a long time with Manchester City and Liverpool outdoing each other in the second half of last season.

Fans of both these teams will want to out-do each other again as the Premier League drops the new timetable. Not to be outdone, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur will also look to jostle for the top spot with renewed vigour.

Premier League however has been busy behind-the-scenes to make the game more interesting, with a new rule to contend with – head-to-head records.

In a bid to avoid the end-of-season play-off, the new rule has been introduced ahead of the upcoming 2019-20 season and will be applicable to those teams who are level on points, goal difference and goal scored.

Under the previous rules, teams level on those three criteria would be forced to undertake a play-off to decide the points table spot. But now, their head-to-head record will also come into play and the team with the most points will take the higher place.

Now if the teams are level on points in their head-to-head record, the team with the most AWAY goals in the matches between them will go one higher.

And should all else fail, the teams will take part in a play-off and will take place at a neutral venue with the format, time and venue to be decided by the Premier League.

This new rule also applies when there is something at stake, such as a relegation spot or a European qualification place.
