Roy Hodgson announced his resignation as England manager after his side suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat against minnows Iceland.

Following Hodgson’s decision to call it quits, assistant coaches Gary Neville and Ray Lewington also stepped down from their roles.

“I’m extremely disappointed about tonight’s result and ultimately our exit from the competition,” Hodgson said at the post-match press conference.

“We haven’t progressed as far as I’d thought we were capable of and ultimately it is not acceptable.”

“Now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of this extremely talented group.”

“I want to thank the media for the support you have given me.

“I am sorry it will have to end this way but these things happen. I hope you will still be able to see an England team in a final of a major tournament soon,” he concluded.

“They came with me as part of my coaching team and they will leave with me.”

Prior to England’s humiliating defeat to Iceland, Joey Barton took a dig at Gary Neville and tweeted: “Think the Neville myth has [been] exploded.”

“Hire the best available if you are serious about winning. Encourage a coaching culture from grassroots level,” said Barton

“Stop giving jobs to ex top players, they might have been great players but coaching is a totally different skill set, it requires expertise! An expertise that has to been learned by doing the time and apprenticeships away from the pressure and spotlight of big jobs.”

“This culture of entitlement has to stop. Anyone can tell you what goes wrong afterwards on the tele/radio it requires very little skill, he concluded.
