UCL MATCHDAY THREE ROUND UP

Matchday three of the UEFA Champions League drew to an end with 59 goals scored and fans being treated to some enthralling football. The round of matches had an amazing start as Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon and their English counterpart thumped Besiktas and Club Brugge respectively.

Real Madrid too produced a brilliant performance as they hammered Shakhtar Donetsk by five goals while Lionel Messi led PSG to a win over RB Leipzig with a 3-2 win.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool ground out a 3-2 win away to Atletico Madrid.

On Wednesday, it was Cristiano Ronaldo’s turn to shine as he scored the winning goal for Man United against Atalanta while Chelsea and Bayern Munich scored four goals each in their clash against Malmo and Benfica respectively.

FootTheBall brings you a comprehensive round-up of the third matchday of the UEFA Champions League campaign.

MESSI AND RONALDO SHINE 

The top two contenders for Ballon d’Or justified their reputation as each acted as a saviour for their team.

Messi scored a brace to help PSG come back from 2-1 down to win the match 3-2.

Kylian Mbappes laid his first goal on a plate while his second came through a penalty which he finished with an audacious panenka against Péter Gulácsi.

Earlier in the match, Mbappe had produced a low finish to give the lead to the French side before Andre Silva equalised for Leipzig before the Germans side added another through Nordi Mukiele in the 57th minute.

On the other hand, Ronaldo rose the highest to meet Luke Shaw’s cross and complete a remarkable comeback as United came back from 2-0 down to win the match 3-2.

United had a terrine start as they found themselves 2-0 down inside 30 minutes at Old Trafford as the Atalanta dominated the midfield battle.

First, it was Mario Pašalić who scored from close range from a Davide Zappacosta pass.

13 minutes later, the Italians doubled their lead as defender Merih Demiral headed in from a corner.

However, United were a changed side in the second half as they began to dominate the proceedings.

After missing a glorious chance early in the game, Marcus Rashford got his name on the scoresheet before Harry Maguire added a second to equalise.

BAYERN AND CHELSEA CRUISE

German champions Bayern Munich and defending champions Chelsea made a meal out of their opponents as they recorded 4-0 wins.

Bayern scored all their goals in the last 23 minutes after earlier strikes from Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski were disallowed.

However, the deadlock was broken by a free-kick from Leroy Sane who absolutely smashed the ball past the hapless Benfica goalkeeper.

This opened the floodgates as an unlucky touch of Everton doubled Bayer’s lead before Lewadowsnki and Sane added two more goals to complete the rout,

Unlike Bayern, Chelsea did not leave it late as they raced off to a 2-0 lead before half-time.

Their first goal from Andreas Christensen before Jorginho added the second through a penalty after Romelu Lukaku was fouled inside the box after which the striker had to leave the field.

Chelsea added a couple more in the second half to record their second win of the season.

 

 

LIVERPOOL WIN DIRTY POINTS

Liverpool produced a gritty performance that eventually got them all three points against Atletico Madrid at Wanda Metropolitano. 

The English side caught their opponents by surprise as they raced off a 2-0 lead within 15 minutes.

The first goal came from Mohammad Salah whose strike took a deflection from James Milner on its way to the goal. Minutes later Naby Keita fired a ferocious shot into the back of the net which was too good for even Jan Oblak.

However, motivated by their fans Atletico stage a comeback as Antoine Griezman add two goals to level things up before the end of the first half.

The second half got off to a chaotic starter as Griezmann was sent off for a high boot into the face of Roberto Firmino.

And finally, Liverpool scored their third from a penalty as Salah sent Oblak the wrong way.

Atletico had a penalty of their own but upon checks by the VAR was disallowed.

BARCELONA’S LACKLUSTRE WIN

The Catalans opened their account in this year Champions League with an uninspiring 1-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv at Nou Camp.

Defender Gerard Pique managed to get his feet on the end of a free-kick to give his team the lead in the 36th minute.

It was not as if the home side didn’t have the chance but their players especially Luuk De Jong were wasteful.

In the second half, Ansu Fati was close to doubling Barcelona’s lead but his audacious overhead kick attempt sailed over the bar.

All in all a very insipid performance by the Spanish giants.

MAN CITY 5-STAR PERFORMANCE

Last year’s runners up Machester City scored five past Belgian outfit Club Brugge to remind everyone that they were very much one of the favourites this time too.

João Cancelo started the proceedings for the English cham[pions before Riyad Mahrez added a brace on either side of goals from Kyle Walker and teenager Cole Palmer.

Palmer’s goal came in his third appearance for City which came after he replaced Kevin de Bruyne in the 64th minute.

Hans Vanken got a consolation for the hosts but the away side were far better and the scoreline was a clear reflection of that.

REAL MADRID DESTROY SHAKHTAR

Spanish giants produced a brilliant display just before the El Clasico as they put five past Shakhgtar without reply. The Spanish giants who suffered a shock defeat on matchday 2 against Moldovan side FC Sheriff came out all guns blazing at the Olympic National Sports Complex in Kyiv.

It all started with a Serhiy Kryvtsov own goal in the 37th minute which was followed by a brace from Vinicius, the second of which was an art of work.

The 21-year-old left Dodo and Krystev in the dust before un leasing a shot past the goalkeeper.

The Brazilian was not done as he teed up his countrymen Rodrygo for Real’s fourth for the night before Benzema wrapped it all; up in the injury times.

JUVENTUS KEEP 100% WIN RECORD ALIVE

The Italian side left it late against Russian side Zenit as Swedish winger Dejan Kulusevski scored an 86th-minute goal to make it three wins ot of three for Juventus.

Both sides started sluggishly and had chances to open the scoring in the first half but Claudinho’s shot was saved by Wojciech Szczęsny and Federico Chiesa could only blaze his shot over the crossbar.

However, the match picked up pace in the second half as Weston Mckenzie and Claudinho both scuffed chances to give their team the lead.

This led to a triple change by Juventus at the hour mark with Kulusevski, Juan Cuadrado and Arthur were introduced which ultimately bore fruit.

AJAX BEST DORTMUND

In the clash of the top two teams in Group C, it was the Dutch side that emerged victorious. 

It took just 11 minutes for the home side to open their account as Dusan Tadic’s free-kick was diverted by Dortmund’s skipper into his own goal.

14 minutes later it was 2-0 as Daley Blind scored from a volley. 

Dortmund’s goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced some good saves to ensure that Ajax’s lead was only 2-0 at half-time.

However, the Dutch side didn’t relent and added two goals more from Antony and Sebstaian Haller to go top of the group.

INTER MILAN ENDS SHERIFF’S WINNING STREAK

Inter Milan inflicted Sherriff’s first defeat in this year’s Champions League to give a boost to their chances of qualification in the Round of 16.

Edin Dzeko opened the scoring for the Italian champions as he volleyed the ball into the net in the 34th minute.

However, the away side who were not going down without a fight as Sebastian Thill who scored the winner against Real Madrid put the ball into the back of the net from a free-kick.

The Italians who had earned only one point from their opening two matches then retook the lead from Arturo Vidal and consolidated their lead further as Stephen de Vrij scored in the 67th minute.

Despite the defeat,  Sheriff remain top of the Group with six points levelled with Real Madrid and two points above Inter.

BEST FROM THE REST

Elsewhere, Sporting put four past Besiktas to record their first win of the campaign. Former Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates scored a brace on either side of a goal from  Cyle Larin inside the thirty minutes.

Just before half-time, Besiktas conceded a penalty which was duly dispatched by Pablo Sarabia in the 44th minute before Paulinho scored the fourth goal in the 89th minutes.

Porto defeated Milan 1-0 at home courtesy of a goal from Luis Diaz. 

This defeat means that Milan are pointless after three games and will require a monumental effort to qualify for the knock out stage.

Villareal continued their good form as they scripted a 4-1 win away to Young Boys.

Yeremi Pino, Gerard Moreno, Alberto Moreno, and Samuel Chukwueze were on target for the away side while Meschak Elia scored a consolation for Young Boys.

In Group G, Austrian side RB Salzburg continued their fine form as they defeated Wolfsburg 3-1 to remain on top five points clear of second-placed Sevilla who played a 0-0 draw with French champions Lille.
