He will not require surgery but he is expected to miss the first two months of the new season.

The 23-year-old’s career has been plagued with injuries. Last season too he was sidelined for five months following a left ankle injury.

After two surgeries he returned to play in the Football Association (FA) Cup final where Arsenal beat Aston Villa 4-0.

In June, he played in England’s friendly draw with the Republic of Ireland and their victory over Slovenia in an European Championship qualifier.

Both ankles have required surgery since he first sustained a stress fracture in his right ankle during pre-season in 2011 and was ruled out for 17 months.
