FROM GLASGOW TO LONDON?

Published on:

Odsonne Edouard may well be on his way to West Ham this summer as speculation about his future at Parkhead intensifies by the day. The Celtic forward was being courted by West Ham’s fellow Premier League club Leicester City initially.

But the Foxes withdrew from the race for the French player as they signed RB Salzburg forward Patson Daka before the start of next season.

This latest development leaves David Moyes’ side clear to acquire the services of the former Paris-Saint Germain player ahead of the start of the next Premier League season.

FootTheBall takes a look at the transfer situation and speculation surrounding the French footballer as the Hammers are reportedly interested in bringing him to the British capital this summer.

WHAT IS THE ODSONNE EDOUARD TRANSFER SITUATION LIKE?

Odsonne Edouard has only one year left on his contract with Scottish Premiership side Celtic, and as such the French forward is being linked with a plethora of clubs this summer.

There are a lot of rumours doing the rounds related to the former Toulouse player in Britain as first it was reported that Leicester City were in pole position to land the signature of Edouard on a long-term contract this summer.

But lately, the Foxes have instead opted to sign Zambian forward Patson Daka that leaves the way clear for the Hammers to bring the 23-year old to London to play in the Premier League.

David Moyes is in need of a player up front to continue in the same vein of form that West Ham had picked up in the 2020-21 season as they qualified for European football.

Therefore, Moyes needs a player who can feature in the forward line for the London club as he looks to the transfer market for reinforcements for the season ahead where they will be playing in the Europa League in addition to the Premier League.

The Frenchman will act as back-up to Michail Antonio at the London Stadium if he ends up being signed by the Hammers this summer. Odsonne Edouard might even be the perfect striker to compliment Antonio at West Ham.

EDOUARD TO MOVE TO ENGLAND THIS SUMMER?

The former Paris-Saint Germain forward performed brilliantly for Celtic last season as he was involved in 21 goals (16 goals, 5 assists) for the Hoops in 26 matches.

But they fell short as Rangers scooped up the domestic title with a whopping 102 points and Celtic will be looking to avenge their second-place finish this time out.

As such, Celtic are not reportedly keen on parting ways with Edouard this summer as they expect him to participate in the qualifying stages of the Champions League for the Hoops.

The 23-year old was initially expected to join the French team at this summer’s Tokyo Olympic Games, but his omission from Les Bleus squad has handed Celtic an unexpected boost.

Edouard is not a very expensive player – a fact that can play to West Ham’s advantage as they bid to sign him this summer.

But new Parkhead boss Ange Postcoglou wants to retain Edouard as Celtic look to mount a title challenge in Scotland next season.

And this can cause problems for West Ham, who are otherwise untroubled by other clubs in the pursuit of the French forward this summer.

Although some reports in the media have reportedly claimed that Celtic will look to capitalise on the Odsonne Edouard situation by making a capital gain that can finance other activities for the Hoops.

But a downside for Celtic in this regard will be the fact that French heavyweights Paris-Saint Germain are entitled to 40% of any potential amount that Celtic receive from the sale of the French player
