Liverpool Get Their Groove Back, Rout Southampton 6-1 In League Cup

Published on:

Two seasons ago, Liverpool had verve that almost got them to the Premier League title. Since then, Liverpool were just a shadow of that team under Brendon Rogers. It seems it has taken Jurgen Klopp less than eight weeks to restore all that.

Liverpool-vs-Southampton

Liverpool’s prolific away form continued as they came from behind to hit Southampton for six and book their place in the semifinals of the Capital One Cup.

Daniel Sturridge, on his first start under the new manager, converted two slickly constructed chances just before the half-hour. Divock Origi helped himself to a hat-trick. Jordon Ibe also struck while Adam Lallana, heckled throughout, enjoyed his most productive and effective game.

Liverpool conceded a goal inside the opening minute to Sadio Mane. It was a rare moment of Southampton joy. Once Liverpool had mustered some rhythm of their own, they were irrepressible.

Klopp’s men came back and led at half-time through a Daniel Sturridge brace and a close-range effort by Divock Origi. The young Belgian completed a hat-trick in the second half and substitute Jordon Ibe also got on the scoresheet.

They’ll now face Stoke City over two legs for a place in the final as Klopp looks to win silverware in his first season at the club.
