Real Madrid A Step Closer To First La Liga Title In Five Years

Real Madrid moved to the top of Spain’s Liga Santander on Wednesday night following a 4-1 win away to Celta Vigo.

The result means that Zinedine Zidane’s side now need just a point away to Malaga next Sunday in the last game of the season in order to assure this season’s league title.

The game had been due to be played in February, but had was postponed after hurricane force winds had blown the roof off Celta’s Balaidos Stadium.

Two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo put Madrid in the driving seat and their task was made much easier when Celta’s star player Iago Aspes was shown a second yellow card for diving and sent off, although TV replays showed he had clearly been fouled by Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.

John Guidetti, who previously had missed chances for the home side, did bring 10-man Celta into the game in the 69th minute, but Karim Benzema scored on the break a minute later to put Madrid 3-1 ahead.

Tony Kroos was able to side-foot home Madrid’s fourth goal of the game in the closing minutes to seal the win.
