Ajax Stay In Pole-Position In Dutch Eredivisie

Published on:

The neck and neck race between league leaders Ajax and PSV in the Dutch Eredivisie continue, with both title contenders winning in the 32nd match round.

Davy Propper and Luuk de Jong led reigning champions PSV to a 2-0 home victory over Vitesse on Tuesday, which meant Ajax had to win at sc Heerenveen on Wednesday night to stay in pole position to capture the Dutch championship.

In the first half in Heerenveen, Arek Milik and Davy Klaassen missed the only two chances and Ajax struggled to make an impact in Heerenveen. In the second half, Ajax played better and the visitors were awarded a penalty after a cross by Mitchell Dijks touched the hand of Heerenveen defender Kenny Otigba.

Milik broke the deadlock. He converted the penalty in the 57 minutes and seven minutes later the Polish striker also tipped in a cross by Dijks to make it 2-0, the final score, for the Amsterdam-based giants.

Due to the win with the same figures as PSV on Tuesday the starting point for the 33rd match round will be the same as for the 32nd match round. Both Ajax and PSV now have 78 points after 32 matches, but Ajax (76-20) have a better goal difference than PSV (79-29), which will be decisive if both teams finish equal on points after 34 match rounds.

In the final two match rounds, Ajax will meet FC Twente (home) and De Graafschap (away), while PSV has to play SC Cambuur (home) and PEC Zwolle (away).
