Copa America 2016: USA 1, Paraguay 0: As It Happened

USA finished at the top in Group A and sealed a place in the knock-out stage as they defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the Centenario Copa America Group A clash at Lincoln Financial Field in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Dempsey gave USA the much deserved half-time lead in the 27th minute. Zardes fired in a low cross to pick Dempsey, who drilled in a low left footed shot from the centre of the box to the centre of the goal to beat Villar.

USA were down to ten men in the 48th minute when Yedlin picked up a second yellow card within the space of a minute for a reckless challenge on Samudio.

Paraguay were denied a sure equaliser in the 82nd minute. Almiron rushed into the box and set up Benitez on his left. The striker escaped a couple of challenges and fired a low strike at goal which was blocked by Guzan and in the very next moment he denied Almiron from the follow-up which only needed a simple tap to find the net.

Paraguay looked desperate and played all out with repeated attacks down the flanks but despite having a numerical disadvantage, USA managed to defend their lead in the dying minutes.
