MONACO VS LYON

The Ligue 1 title race could take another turn on Sunday when 3 placed Monaco host 4th placed Lyon on Sunday.

All top 4 teams are fighting for the Ligue 1 title and a win for either team could see them go top of the table if both Lille and PSG drop points in their upcoming fixtures. AS Monaco is still optimistic that they could be crowned champions of France whereas the clash at Stade Louis II could be Lyon’s last opportunity to get a ticket to Europe.

This matchup seemed to be pivotal for both teams’ title ambitions but Lyon was more or less thrown out of the championship race last week when they blew a two-goal advantage to fall 3-2 at Parc Olympique Lyonnais to Lille, falling six points behind the table-toppers with just four games left.

Monaco, on the other hand, is still in contention in the third position, two points behind rivals Lille and one behind current champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Monaco has collected a total of 38 points at home which is 4 more than any other team and a win on Sunday could increase their title hopes and dent Lyon’s chances of finishing in the top-3.

Rudi Garcia’s Olympique Lyonnais is a better team playing away from home. They have won their last 15 games away from home and could spoil Monaco’s party when they travel to Stade Louis II.

Indeed, Monaco can still think of a competitive double against if they get past Rumily Vallieres in the Coupe De France semi-final, while Lyon’s season, which had so much hope, now fears finishing in frustration. They’ll have to live with a fourth-place finish and a place in the Europa League next season

TEAM NEWS

Niko Kovac has some issues to deal with coming into Sunday’s clash. A Covid-19 outbreak has forced a few players out of the clash. And Stevan Jovetic and Sofiane Diop are facing injuries making them unavailable for Sunday’s clash.

Monaco predicted XI : Benjamin Lecomte, Djibril Sidibe, Guillermo Maripan, Axel Disasi, Caio Henrique, Ruben Aguilar, Cesc Fabregas, Aurelien Tchouameni, Youssouf Fofana, Kevin Volland, Wissam Ben Yedder

Rudi Garcia also has some injury concerns to deal with. Melvin Bard won’t be able to be a part of the team whereas Islam Slimani seems doubtful.

Lyon predicted XI : Anthony Lopes, Leo Dubois, Marcelo, Jason Denayer, Maxwel Cornet, Thiago Mendes, Maxence Caqueret, Karl Toko Ekambi, Houssem Aouar, Memphis Depay, Lucas Paquetá

GAME CHANGERS

Lyon will once again expect their talismanic striker and captain to set some goals for them. He is the top scorer for the club this season and would look to add to his tally of 20 goals for the club.

He has been on a fine run in Ligue 1 and could be the difference between the two sides. In the last 6 games played between the two teams, none of them have ended up being goal-less. The Dutch could avenge Lyon’s loss to Monaco in the quarter-final of the French Cup at Stade Louis II.

Monaco will look at Wissam Ben Yedder to help them secure 3 points in Sunday’s clash. Ben Yedder has been the go-to man for Niko Kovac this season. He has been on the scoresheet 18 times for Les Monegasques and also has 5 assists to his name.

Another player who could dent Lyon’s Champions League aspirations is Kevin Volland. The German winger has 15 goals to his name and would look to add a few more on Sunday. He also has 7 assists which could help the hosts defeat Rudi Garcia’s side.

PREDICTION

Both these teams look great on paper and fans could witness a mouth-watering clash on Sunday. But it might be difficult for Rudi Garcia’s team to stop Niko Kovac’s team from marching on to a win. A tight game is predicted but AS Monaco might turn out victorious on Sunday and FootTheBall predicts a scoreline of 2-1.
