The Potters are now clear favourites to sign the Welsh midfielder.

The 26-year old was heavily linked with a move back to former club Swansea City, though West Ham and Manchester United were also said to be interested in his services.

Allen was also a key-figure in the Welsh national teams extra-ordinary run in the EURO 2016 campaign. The play-maker has entered the final year in his contract and the club failed to make him any offers for an extension.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said “We will find a solution but it’s not done. Obviously Joe Allen is a good player. We never doubted this. He played a good European Championship, like the whole Welsh team. We have to make decisions, we have to find solutions. We have to talk to the player, ask the player and think about our situation. That’s how it works.”

However Allen was not happy with his playing time last season, when he started just 8 Premier League games and the Welshman had asked for a guarantee of more game-time.
