Switzerland documented its first victory in the group stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup by crushing Ecuador 10-1.
Earlier in the tournament the Swiss national team suffered a (0-1) defeat to Japan. However by demolishing Ecuador, they seem to pick up form at a crucial stage of the championship and manage to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the knockout round. Ecuador however faced back to back defeats. Before being subjected to an embarrassing defeat against Switzerland they also lost to Cameroon (0-6).
Despite the huge gap in scoreline, Ecuador put up some real resistance in the first half. After an Angie Ponce own goal handed Switzerland a 1-0 lead, Eseosa Aigbogun scored just before the break to make it 2-0.
The second half was dominated by Switzerland as Fabienne Humm and Ramona Bachman both completed hat-tricks and Martina Moser also got on the scoreboard.
Ecuador’s Angie Ponce had a hat-trick, too, at the BC Place Stadium, but two of the goals were own goals for the opposition.
Nevertheless, the 18-year-old defender hit her country’s first World Cup goal when she converted a 64th-minute penalty.
