World Champions Germany faced Ukraine in the Group C match at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille.

Germany came in-to the EUROs on the back of a shaky qualifying rounds performance, but still the 2014 World Cup winners were huge favorites to win the match.

The World champions came out victorious in a hard fought battle, with a 2-0 scoreline.

It didn’t take long for Germany to make the chances count as Shkodran Mustafi scored with a header from a Toni Kroos free-kick in the 19th minute.

The Valencia defender headed the ball into the left corner of the net, putting the Germans ahead in the early minutes.

Germany continued to press forward, building pressure on Ukranian defense.

Though Ukraine did manage to create tensions in the German defense with set-pieces, but were twice denied by Manuel Neuer’s magnificent saves.

Ukraine came very close to scoring in the 36th minute after a brilliant play by Yarmolenko, the ball almost went inside the German net, but were denied by a late clearance by Jerome Boateng.

2 minutes later Ukraine found the net, but it was called offside by the fourth official.

Ukraine dominated the last 10 minutes of the first half and Germany were lucky tio go into half-time with their lead still intact.

Second half started with a German attack, but Ukraine kept building pressure on the World Champions.

Though Germany recovered and gained control of the match from the early 50th minute, as they kept creating chances, though star play-maker Mesut Ozil struggled in the second half, losing possession on key occasions.

Ukraine struggled to keep possession and Germany dominated the second half as Ukraine could only manage 3 shots, with just one on target.

Mario Gotze was replaced by German captain Bastian Schweinsteiger in the 90th minute, who was welcomed with huge cheers by the fans.

The veteran midfielder didn’t disappoint as he scored in the 91st minute to double Germany’s lead and sealed a 2-0 victory.
