Liverpool could be in pole position to sign Leon Goretzka after relations between Schalke and Bayern Munich hit a rough path.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have shown huge interest in roping in Leon Goretzka during the January transfer window but current Bundesliga leaders want to steal the Schalke star from under the noses of the Reds.
The Bundesliga giants made their interest in the Germany international public earlier this week after sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic revealed that the midfielder is on their radar.
However, this has not gone down well with Schalke chief Christian Heidel, who has slammed Salihamidzic for Bayern’s approach to sign Goretzka.
And it is being said that Liverpool could now be on the driving seat to seal a deal for the 22-year-old midfielder.
“Bayern say Leon is a player of Schalke, but then talk more about a player of Schalke than about their own!” Heidel said.
“As a result, they [the transfer rumours] are fuelled again and again.
“We do not have to hear every day from the people of Munich how good the player is!”
Earlier this week, Bayern sporting director Salihamidzic suggested that the Bundesliga champions will try to land Goretzka this month.
“Leon Goretzka is a great player, that’s clear,” he said.
“He is a Schalke player and we obviously respect that.
“But he is a Germany international and we can say that we are interested in him.”
Goretzka, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has four goals and one assist to his name from 12 appearances in all competitions this season.
