Manchester City Obliged To Win Title After Spending So Much – Herrera

Published on:

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera insisted that Manchester City will face all the heat in the Premier League title race after spending huge cash to bolster their squad this summer following a trophyless campaign last season.

The Manchester rivals have made incredible starts to the new season – with both the clubs having identical records so far this term.

Both United and City sit joint-top of the Premier League table with 13 points, 16 goals scored and two conceded from five games.

Guardiola’s Man City fell short in the Premier League title race in his debut campaign in England, finishing third below Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, but this time around City have splurged around 220 million in the summer transfer window.

Man City roped in six new players this summer – Ederson, Kyle Walker, Danilo, Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva and Douglas Luiz.

Man City have formed a super-strong attacking lineup featuring Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus upfront and well supported by the likes of David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.

The new signings this summer have guided Man City to an unbeaten start to the season.

Herrera insisted that Man City’s huge spending this summer make them the favourites for the title and so all the pressure is on Pep Guardiola’s side rather than Jose Mourinho’s Man Utd.

“We won three titles last season [the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League] and Man City didn’t win anything,” Herrera told reporters.

“They are under pressure. They are obligated to win something. They have more obligation than us.”

“City have spent the biggest amount in the Premier League so they are the principle contenders for the title.”

“We have quality as well, but because of the money they have spent, they are the favourites.”

“We will try to be there. There is pressure when you spend a lot but there is also pressure on us because we are the biggest club in England.”

“But you know when you play for United that you are under an obligation to win things and I like that obligation.”
