England Beat Lithuania 1-0 As Salah Sends Egypt To World Cup For The First Time In 28 Years
Visiting England beat Lithuania 1-0 on Sunday in Group F of the 2018 FIFA World Cup European qualifiers.
At LFF Stadium in Vilnius, capital city of Lithuania, captain Harry Kane gave England the lead with a 27th minute penalty following a foul on Dele Alli, who was chopped down by Ovidijus Verbickas as he pursued a bouncing ball.
Topping Group F with 26 points, England has secured its place in the FIFA World Cup finals in Russia next year, while Lithuania maintains fifth place with six points from as many teams.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification process decides 31 of the 32 teams to play in the quadrennial international football tournament scheduled from June 14 to July 15, 2018 while Russia qualify automatically as hosts.
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah caused a pitch invasion after sending Egypt to the 2018 World Cup with a 95th minute penalty.
Salah had had opened the scoring for Egypt early on against Congo only for the visitors to clinch an equaliser, leaving their qualification chances hanging in the balance.
But the Egyptian side were given a golden opportunity in stoppage time when the referee pointed to the spot for a penalty to Egypt.
And the former Chelsea man smashed home from 12-yards to beat Congo 2-1 with just seconds of injury time to spare.
