Playing for the club of his birth town, at Sporting de Gujon he was nicknamed Lucho ‘the fighter’ after Luis Flores a Mexican forward in the team.
THE CLASSIC SWITCH
Luis is one of the few players to play for both Barcelona and Real Madrid. He played 5 season for Real before moving to arch rivals Barca in 1996.
Luis began his managerial career with Barcelona B in 2008. In 2011 he moved to Roma. In the 2013–14 season he managed Celta, before returning to Barcelona and winning the treble in his first year and the double in his second.
Luis Enrique played for Spain in 3 Fifa world cups: 1994, 1998 and 2002 with 62 caps and 12 goals. He was also a member of the gold-winning squad at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
IN HIGH PLACES
He was recommended for the Barcelona job by sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta, his former national teammate. His appointment was announced on May 19, 2014.

In March 2004, Luis Enrique was named to Pele’s FIFA 100 list of the greatest living footballers. He was one of three Spaniards to make in to this list.
After retiring as a player Luis lived in Australia for a while. He practiced surfing there.
THE MARATHON MAN
Luis took part in the 2005 edition of the New York city marathon. In 2006, he finished the Amsterdam marathon. He took part in the Firenze marathon and Frankfurt Ironman in 2007. He also participated in Marathon de Sables in 2008.
