Out-of-favour Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas proved a point after scoring two crucial goals in extra-time which helped the Blues to clinch a 4-2 win over reigning Premier League champions Leicester City in the EFL Cup tie on Tuesday.
Leicester City striker Shinji Okazaki put an end to his goal drought by scoring two back to back goals within 37 minutes – both of which didn’t reach the net but crossed the goal-line with Cesar Azpilicueta failing to clear the ball off the line on both occasions.
Chelsea ace defender Gary Cahill pulled one back for the Blues during the fag end of the first-half before Azpilicueta fired in a volley past Leicester goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler to clinch the much needed equaliser just four minutes the restart.
Chelsea boss Conte brought in Diego Costa and Hazard during the second half and Foxes boss summoned star striker Jamie Vardy as both the managers wanted to breathe more firepower into their squad.
Both the teams had some chances but they failed to make use of the opportunities on a couple of occasions. Diego Costa and Ahmed Musa missed golden chances and lacked the much needed finishing. Cesc Fabregas stole the show by netting in a brace within the first-half of extra-time as Chelsea took full advantage of Marcin Wasilewski’s sending off due to double yellow cards.
“I was happy to play first of all. Hopefully this will stop people talking about me and focus on what is important — Chelsea winning,” said Fabregas.
“I know what I can do and it is a lot for this team.”
“He (Wasilewski) is a very aggressive man and gives a lot of energy but he has to maintain his calm,” said Leicester boss Ranieri.
“I am happy with our performance until we went 2-0 up. We put pressure on them and had the game under control.”
