Rooney, Hart, Sturridge & Southgate Lay Wreaths For Remembrance Day At Stapenhill Cemetery

England skipper Wayne Rooney, interim Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate along with Daniel Sturridge and Joe Hart paid a tribute to the soldiers who died fighting for their country at the Stapenhill Cemetery on Tuesday.

england-playersAhead of England’s World Cup qualifier clash with Scotland on Friday, the quartet took some time off from their busy schedule to visit a war memorial near their Burton-upon-Trent training camp.

england-world-cup-qualifierThey were also accompanied by young talents form Burton Albion’s academy as they placed poppy wreaths on the memorial and also listened to a speech.

Earlier, Fifa had prohibited England and Scotland from wearing poppies on their jerseys for the upcoming World Cup qualifier clash to be held on Friday.

poppy-englishVeteran groups have protested and they want the two Football Associations to come together and support the decision of football’s governing body for the upcoming World Cup qualifier clash between England and Scotland on Armistace Day.

englandThe World Cup qualifier clash is set to be held at Wembley and FIFA has imposed a strict ban on poppies being worn by the English and Scottish players on Armistice Day.

FIFA had accentuated that ‘poppy’ – the symbol of memorial has a political connotation and it cannot be worn by players on their shirts for the World Cup qualifier clash which will take at Wembley on Armistice Day.

poppyThe rules set down by FIFA states that the team shirts should not be used as a propaganda tool and they should not carry religious, political or commercial messages or connotations.

But FIFA refused to lift the ban and in its place it advised the English players to wear black armbands and put an arrangement of flowers on the pitch during the national anthem.

rooneyHowever, they finally softened their stance and the England players were allowed to wear an embroidered poppy on their shirts for the match that was held in November 2011.

engThis time around, footballers and fans had protested against FIFA’s decision to not allow England and Scotland from wearing poppies on their jerseys for the upcoming World Cup qualifier clash to be held on Friday.

poppy-1And meanwhile, FA have confirmed that they will wear black armbands bearing poppies for the crucial World Cup qualifier clash with Scotland – their ‘Auld Enemy.’
