Spanish club Atletico Madrid has been busy this summer in search of a world-class striker. Recent media reports confirm that Diego Simeone is keen on roping in the services of Napoli hitman Gonalo Higuain to bolster his attacking options.
28-year-old Argentine forward Higuain has been under the radar of top European clubs which includes Liverpool, Arsenal and Paris Saint Germain. However critics believe that Atletico Madrid’s recent success in both the domestic and continental domain will help Simeone to convince the striker to sign for the club.
Higuain had an incredible last season at Napoli with 36 league goals to his name. Napoli had a great start to their league campaign last season but they failed to hold on to the momentum in the later stages, ending up second to Juventus, who clinched their 5th consecutive Serie A title.
The 2015/16 Serie A season brought in a lot of success for the former Real Madrid star as he broke Gunnar Nordhal’s record for most goals scored in a single season.
Gunnar Nordhal had scored 35 goals in a season when he featured for AC Milan but Higuain broke the 66-year-old record with a hat-trick against Frosinone on the final day of the league campaign, taking his tally to 36 goals in a single season.
At present Higuain is on International duty, playing for Argentina in the Centenario Copa America 2016. He grabbed the headlines with his two early goals in the quarter-final against Veneuela which helped his team to seal the semi-final berth.
Higuain’s success at both the club and international circuit has been the main driving force behind Simeone’s interest in the Argentine forward, but football gurus believe that Napoli will cancel out an initial bid of €60m as the club will look for an offer that meets the €94m buy-out-clause for Gonzalo Higuain.

The Spanish club have recently announced that they have convinced Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan to join the club this summer. Gaitan is Higuain’s international team-mate and it is believed that Simeone may use the services of the 28-year-old midfielder to convince Higuain, who is keen on making a switch this summer.
