But now he suffered a massive dip in his form and has managed to score just three goals in his last 13 Premier League games.
The Belgian has drawn huge criticism from fans and pundits following a run of sloppy performances but Mourinho has always defended his striker.
But now the Portuguese fears that Lukaku has lost his pace because he has bulked up too much.
The Sun claim Lukaku has put on almost half a stone since joining from Everton last summer.
The club doctors have assured Mourinho that Lukaku’s extra weight is all muscle and not fat.
But the Man Utd hierarchy are worried that it has slowed down the Belgian hit-man.
Man Utd are second in the Premier League table but 15 points behind current leaders Manchester City and just six points ahead of Tottenham in fifth.
Man Utd succumbed to two consecutive draws in the Premier League and they will hope to return to winning ways on Saturday when they host Southampton.
