GOODBYE KYLIAN?

Published on:

A transfer window that will resonate in the minds of football fans for the rest of their lives. Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos donning the same jersey, Jack Grealish becoming Premier League’s new million-dollar face, and the numerous rumours shrouding European football, this summer has been magnificent.

But with the transfer market ending next week, clubs aren’t stopping their shopping spree. Latest reports have suggested that Kylian Mbappe could be leaving PSG and departing for Real Madrid this summer instead of January 2022.

The Frenchman’s contract ends next year and Real Madrid was expected to buy the forward for free next season. But Perez’s impatience and PSG’s reluctance has forced Madrid to drop several offers for the striker.

Mbappe has himself not signed a contract renewal hinting toward a switch, and if that continues PSG would want some money from the transfer instead of letting him go for free next season. We at FootTheBall take a look at Kylian Mbaape’s transfer saga- where it stands, where will the Frenchman go, and what will be the ramifications of his move?

KYLIAN MBAPPE TO MADRID TURNING INTO REALITY

According to MARCA, the Frenchman could land at Santiago Bernabeu this summer itself. PSG have constantly tried to extend Mbappe’s contract by offering him multiple contracts but the youngster has refused to put pen to paper every single time. And if reports are to be believed, PSG’s French goal-machine could leave Ligue-1 to try a new challenge in La Liga before the transfer window closes.

Florentino Perez had been saving up money for almost two years now to secure the signatures of Mbappe and Haaland. And when the summer window opened this summer, Los Blancos’ hunt for the striker became even more legit.

RMC Sport reported that PSG are prepared for Mbappe’s departure and would want to let him leave for a hefty cheque this season rather than for free next summer. PSG’s number.7’s contract expires in the summer of 2022 which makes him a free agent after that. And if the choice falls in the Frenchman’s hands, Real Madrid surely have an upper hand.

THE INVITE ARRIVES

Los Blancos waited for an invitation from Qatar to discuss the future of Kylian Mbappe which has finally arrived. The owners of the Parisians have finally realised that they are running a football club and Mbappe’s departure was almost inevitable.

The striker had smashed 92 goals for PSG in Ligue-1 and was considered the rightful heir of Messi’s and Ronaldo’s legacy along with Erling Haaland. Although a formal offer is yet to arrive, PSG is expecting a cheque of at least 150 million pounds for the Frenchman.

Florentino Perez initially presented an offer of 100 million pounds to check the Parisisna’s patience but Nasser Al-Khelaifi won’t let the Frenchman depart for anything less than 150 million pounds.

Another fact is Real Madrid have constantly been removing their expensive players to accommodate the arrival of the star. First club captain, Sergio Ramos departed for Mbappe’s current team and then French centre-back Raphael Varane signed a contract with the Red Devils. Martin Odegaard was permanently transferred to the Gunners while other players were loaned out to reduce the wage bill of Los Blancos.

MADRID’S RECENT BID FOR MBAPPE

The Real Madrid fans have received an injection of ecstasy with a new piece of news clouding European football. Los Blancos have officially made a 160 million euros bid for French striker Kylian Mbappe. The club has constantly been chasing the World Cup winner after he had expressed his desire to join his dream club.

But PSG has unfortunately shown Madrid the exit door rejecting their million-dollar offer. Kylian Mbappe has neglected to sign almost three or four contract renewals putting his future at the club in jeopardy. But even the Parisians have been firm in not letting one of their biggest assets leave the club that easily.

Although Florentino Perez won’t stop his hunt for Mbappe, the final decision will lie in the hands of PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Either he could let the Frenchman depart for a jaw-dropping amount of 150 million euros or above and help his finances or wait for Mbappe’s contract to end hoping the striker would renew when the next offer presented to him. But as of now, PSG has rejected another offer from Real Madrid hinting that PSG might gain Mbappe’s services for another season.

WHY DOES KYLIAN MBAPPE WANT TO LEAVE?

The 2018 World Cup Winner has won major accolades during his tenure at PSG but has failed to conquer the European crown. The unfortunate Parisians missed his services when they were knocked out in the semifinals last year.

And with Real Madrid possessing immense knowledge about winning the European competition, Mbappe could surely join the Spanish outfit to add the European piece of silverware to his trophy cabinet.

Another factor is if Kylian Mbappe stays at PSG, he could be stranded in Lionel Messi’s shadows with the Argentine arriving for free this summer. There’s no doubt Messi would have become the talk of the town wherever he would have gone and his arrival might be troubling the Frenchman.

If he moves to Bernabeu, Mbappe could steal the spotlight, something Eden Hazard was expected to do. But Hazard’s long-lasting injury list and the lack of goal-scoring quality present in Madrid’s forward-line means the Frenchman would be Madrid’s biggest blessing after Ronaldo.

BALL IN MADRID’S COURT?

When Messi arrived at PSG, questions shrouded Mbappe’s future at the club. Will the Argentine’s presence cloud PSG’s biggest asset or will Mbappe stay at PSG to form an inevitable trio of ‘MNM’.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the PSG President exclaimed “Mbappe? He is a PSG player. Mbappe has said publicly that he doesn’t want to leave the team, We know his future, he has already said he doesn’t want to leave the team and he will stay. He said he wanted a competitive team, and you can’t have a more competitive team [than what we have here]. He has no reason to do anything other than stay. Mbappe has a winning mentality. He’s one of our players.”

But right now the transfer negotiations could have taken a u-turn with PSG on the verge of losing Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman had reportedly pressured PSG into accepting offers from Madrid and is keen on leaving Parc Des Princes as soon as possible.

And PSG has realised that if they restrict Mbappe’s deal for another season, the French forward will surely leave for free and with PSG spending billions every summer in the transfer window this could be their opportunity to revive their finances.

Messi’s arrival might have inclined Mbappe to leave the French club even more considering the striker has been thrown out of the limelight by La Pulga. Mbappe’s teammate Neymar had earlier left Barcelona to leave Messi’s shadows, something Mbappe could surely do.

THE RAMIFICATIONS OF THE SWITCH

Kylian Mbappe’s possible switch to Real Madrid doesn’t just affect him but other players across Europe. Erling Haaland’s future at Signal Iduna Park could be in jeopardy considering his release clause activates from the 1st of September. While Los Blancos’ former Portuguese veteran Cristiano Ronaldo could end his Italian fairytale.

If all the pieces of the puzzle are put into place, we could experience an unimaginable shuffling of the pack. If Mbappe moves for a fee of 150 million euros or above, the Parisians will have enough funds to capture the signature of Cristiano Ronaldo. The veteran was benched in the contest against Udinese raising concerns over his future at Juventus.

And if Ronaldo finds home in Paris, the dream team of Messi, Neymar, and Ronaldo, a forward battery only possible in FIFA, could become a reality. The 36-year-old Portuguese could combine with the other two South Americans and demolish European giants. And with Kylian Mbappe refusing a contract renewal it’s almost inevitable that PSG would want to bill a few pounds from Madrid, considering he could leave for free next summer.

Borussia Dortmund’s Norwegian forward Erling Haaland had reportedly promised the Germans just two years at the club and in return had asked for freedom while leaving BVB. And with his release clause becoming active six months earlier than expected, Haaland could land at Real Madrid for free.

Los Blancos had reportedly saved up money to buy either the Frenchman or the Norwegian forward, but if Kylian Mbappe’s announcement comes this week, they could avoid matching the 68 million pounds release clause of Erling Haaland.
