Everton Boss Ronald Koeman Eyes European Qualification After Sunderland Win
Everton has made a flying start to the new season and Romelu Lukaku’s 11-minute hat-trick in the second half helped them to clinch all the three points against Sunderland on Monday. With 10 points from 4 matches, Everton now sits at the third place on the league, just below Chelsea on goal difference.
In a post-match interview Ronald Koeman asserted that his team has all the potential to qualify for Europe but later maintained that it’s too early in the season to predict.
“I know the quality of players, we are very strong and had some good signings, I think Europe is a realistic target,” the former Southampton boss said.
“The start is very good but it is only after four matches.”
“I was really disappointed about our first 45 minutes. It was not the level that we need to show. our ball possession was poor, and then it’s always dangerous to play against Sunderland and you saw the difference in the second half. We kept the ball much more with good movements in attack and create goals,” Koeman continued.
The Dutchman heaped praise on Romelu Lukaku, who broke his goal drought and scored three quick-fire goals within 11 minutes in the second half against Sunderland.
“The hat-trick was important, also for the boy for himself because the press is talking about the long time that he did not score for Everton and I said to Romelu ‘Always the best answer is on the pitch’ and he gave that answer tonight.”
“He’s a great player, he’s a target man in front, he’s strong, he’s a scoring player and you need goals to win game and that he showed tonight.”
Next in Premier League, Everton are set to face Middlesbrough at Goodison Park on Saturday.
