‘I’ve Been Watching My Funeral For A While!’ – Milan Boss Montella Not Feeling The Heat
Vincenzo Montella is confident that the AC Milan bosses have faith in him despite another disappointing result in Thursday’s goalless draw against AEK Athens in the Europa League, joking that he has been watching his “funeral for a while”.
Milan has made a poor start this season and produced another sloppy performance on Thursday, failing to take control of the game without any attacking intent.
A win over AEK Athens would have sealed their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League but now the Serie A outfit will have to wait as they were held to a goalless draw – leaving them with just one win in their last seven games in all competitions.
But it seemed that Montella was not worried despite reportedly under-fire following Milan’s disappointing run of results this season.
“I’ve been watching my funeral for a while,” he quipped to Sky Sport Italia.
“It gives you a new perspective on things. All joking aside, the club has faith in me and we’ll see.
“In all honesty, we need to work. I see the squad eager to work and there is quality there. A few weeks ago we created more, but allowed more in defence.
“Now we don’t create as much, but also barely allow any chances for our opponents.”
Milan skipper Leonardo Bonucci also came out in Montella’s defence, saying that it is the players who go out on the pitch, not the boss.
“We are the ones who step on to the field,” he added.
“It’s not just the ideas of the coach. We need to get results to bring back the enthusiasm we had this summer.
“I see a lot of quality in this squad, but we lack a little bit of character and confidence to take more responsibility when the ball is at our feet.”
