Schalke’s Breel Embolo will be sidelined for at least six months due to a foul play from Konstantinos Stafylidis, the “Royal Blues” confirmed in an official statement on Sunday.
The Switzerland international suffered a broken ankle and multiple torn ligaments following a tackle from defender Stafylidis in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Augsburg.
The 19-year-old new arrival had to be carted off the pitch with 24 minutes into the game and was taken immediately into the hospital. On Sunday, the striker successfully underwent the surgery in the Hessingpark-Clinic.
According to the doctors Embolo will be “at least out of action for four to six months”. A more precise outlook on his comeback can be given two months into rehab training.
“We will give Breel every kind of support so that he can return from this serious injury,” Schalke’s sporting director Christian Heidel said.
The “Royal Blues” sit 16th at the Bundesliga standings with four points from seven games.
