Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s only goal saved Man Utd from further Europa League humiliation as the Red Devils clinched a narrow 1-0 win over Ukrainian side Zorya.
Mourinho’s side looked all over the place and struggled to test the opposition defence. Man Utd failed to launch a shot on target before the Flying Swede headed in the winner in the 69th minute.
Fosu-Mensah created a brilliant move down the right and swapped passes before picking Rooney in the area. The Man Utd captain, who was introduced as a substitute launched a shot but it inadvertently ran to Ibrahimovic, who headed the ball home from close range.
In a lack-lustre first-half Man Utd prodigy Marcus Rashford had the chance to score the opener but his venomous strike ramped against the crossbar after he got on the end of the ball from a corner.
The Ukrainian side failed to open up any space in the United box but came close to break the deadlock when substitute Paulinho’s strike into the far corner was saved by goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
“It was not an easy game, we played well, created chances but this is a typical game,” said Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
“If you want to go through, you need to win the game, we did that. We could have done much more though and I expect much more from the team.”
“It was difficult. We had our chances in the first half, we could have scored and it would have been a different match. But we didn’t,” said Mourinho.
“One week, three defeats. One week, three victories. But I was not depressed by the defeats and I am not over the moon with three wins.”
