Published on:

AS Roma announced that they appointed Jose Mourinho as their new coach for the 2021-22 season. Jose Mourinho who was sacked by Tottenham Hotspurs on April 19th after only 17 months with the club, will be coming back to Italy as a second stint. With his first one being with Inter Milan in which he won Inter the Memorable treble in the 2009-10 season. Just like Conte and Ranieri, Mourinho returned from the Premier League to Serie A.

AS Roma who were heavily linked with Maurizio Sarri through out this year ended up finally signing Mourinho in secret deal with the portuguese but Jose is not the only star name from the Premier League coming to the Serie A looking for redemption. Here is a list of players and managers who have made the transition from Premier League to Serie A

MANAGERS

ANTONIO CONTE- INTER MILAN

The former Chelsea coach made the switch back to Italian football 2 seasons ago, a year after he was sacked by Chelsea despite of 2 really good seasons with the blues.

Conte won the Premier League and the FA Cup in his 2 seasons in the Premier League but ended up having issues with the Chelsea board. Since he has signed for Inter, he has successfully revolutionised the entire league again with his re-introduction of the 3 at the back system.

CLAUDIO RANIERI – SAMPDORIA

The legendary Leicester manager who helped Leicester win their only PL title in probably the greatest under-dog story of all time is now coaching Italian team Sampdoria.

He has really worked hard on the team and which can be seen in the league positions, Sampdoria finished 15th last season and are currently 9th in the Serie A table, with time Ranieri’s Sampdoria will only keep improving

PLAYERS

ROMELU LUKAKU- INTER MILAN

Romelu Lukaku has become one of the best strikers in the world, playing for Conte’s Inter. Lukaku was Conte’s first choice even back at Chelsea but had to make do with Morata.

Lukaku has tore the Serie A apart and has become one of the hottest properties in Europe with Inter slapping a price tag of 105 million Euros on him. Lukaku has played for top English Clubs like Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United, following a rather disappointing period in Manchester, Lukaku really has looked like he has found his feet in Milan. He is just one of the many players who have made a move from Premier League to Serie A.

CHRIS SMALLING- AS ROMA

Following a very topsy turvy 10 years in Manchester, Smalling made a switch to Rome. Smalling might not have had the most elusive career at Manchester United but his experience of the Premier League really made him one of the best defenders in the Serie A in the very first season.

His world class performances week in and week out persuaded Roma to make his loan move permanent. He has been the starting Centre Back for Roma through the last 2 seasons while he was consistently struggling for playing time at Manchester.

JUAN CUADRADO- JUVENTUS

Cuadrado has been an integral part of Juventus for the past 5 seasons now, but the Colombian only decided to make a move to the Old lady after he saw his career at Stamford Bridge failing.

He made his move first in the 2015/16 season where Cuadroado’s consistent performance made the Old lady buy the Colombian International in a permanent deal in the 2018 season. He has been one of the regulars in the Juventus tem ever since.

AARON RAMSEY- JUVENTUS

The midfielder spent a massive 11 years at Arsenal and had became a fan favourite after playing a key role in their three FA Cup wins.

Ramsey decided to take on a new challenge in the 2019 summer by joining Juventus on a free transfer, earning a reported whopping £400,000-a-week in wages too. Ramsey’s first season was hindered with injuries but he started playing upto his reputation in the second season.

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN- INTER MILAN

Eriksen really struggled in his first season at Inter but he eventually found a place as the lone number 10 in Antonio Conte’s 3-5-2 system. Eriksen has been an integral part of Conte’s Inter that have finally won the Scudetto after 11 long years, ending Juve’s reign. Eriksen left Tottenham 6 months before his contract was ending.

WOJCIECH SZCZESNY- JUVENTUS

Many Arsenal fans were happy when Szczesny was sold to Juventus. The goalkeeper had fallen behind Petr Cech as the starting goalkeeper at Arsenal and he spent two seasons on loan at Roma before his permanent move to Juventus in 2017.

He eventually replaced Gianluigi Buffon to become the undisputed starting goalkeeper at Juventus, and he certainly isn’t lacking in any confidence.

“Recently I said that when I was back-up at Roma, it was to the best goalkeeper in the world, Alisson, who’s now at Liverpool,” Szczesny told Przeglad Sportowy.

“Now at Juve my substitute is one of the greatest players in history. The conclusions are that I’m probably the best in the world and in history.”

ASHLEY YOUNG- INTER MILAN

Young saw himself drop the pecking order at Manchester United after the signing of right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and emergence of left back Brandon Williams.

The 34-year-old completed a very surprise move to Inter Milan in 2019 but got an assist on his debut. He has been a regular at the wing back position for Inter this season.

Jose Mourinho might just take the Serie A by storm as he can make Roma one of the most well drilled team in the whole of Europe.
