Earlier in the summer, the Reds were keen on signing the Dutch defender but Southampton threatened them of FIFA action claiming they had illegally approached the 26-year-old player and the Reds were forced into issuing an apology

Chelsea and Manchester City had also shown huge interest in Van Dijk but the Dutchman always had his heart set on a move to Anfield.

And according to the Telegraph, Liverpool and Southampton had been in secret talks before agreeing on a world-record fee for a defender.

Liverpool will pay up £75million to secure the services of Van Dijk and this will smash the club-record deal they agreed with RB Leipzig for Naby Keita.

And the Reds have now conformed the signing after the Dutchman completed a medical at the club today.

Van Dijk will join his new team-mates on January 1 but he spoke his heart out on Instagram after sealing his dream move.

“Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player,” he posted on Instagram.

“Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football!

“I can’t wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come.”

Liverpool also released a statement to confirm the signing.

“Liverpool Football Club can confirm they have reached an agreement with Southampton for the transfer of Virgil van Dijk,” a Liverpool statement read.

“The Reds have agreed a deal with the south coast club, and the player himself, that will see the 26-year-old defender move to Anfield when the transfer window re-opens on January 1, 2018.

“The Netherlands international will be assigned squad number four, upon his arrival at Liverpool.”

Van Dijk will take home a £180,000-a-week wage packet at Liverpool and it is understood that he will take Dejan Lovren’s place in the first-team.

Liverpool front-four have displayed incredible form this season but poor defending have cost them valuable points. The Reds have conceded 23 league goals this season so far and Klopp has drawn huge criticism for their sloppy defensive performance.

But now, Van Dijk’s arrival at the heart of the Liverpool defence comes as a huge boost for Klopp, who is desperate to turn things around.
