Manchester United have not yet allotted their No.7 shirt to any player and it is believed that they have kept it free for a major signing.
Man Utd are willing to splurge £100million to sign Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann next year, according to FootTheBall sources.
The Red Devils are still keen on landing the French superstar and they have reportedly kept the NO.7 shirt free for Griezmann.
The France international had been heavily linked with Old Trafford early in the summer transfer window, but Atletico’s transfer ban until January ended any hopes of luring him to the Premier League.
But, sources close to Man Utd have told FootTheBall that Griezmann is still very much on manager Jose Mourinho’s wishlist.
The Red Devils bosses have not yet handed their iconic No.7 shirt to any player this season.
The shirt is of high commercial value and had been previously worn by Old Trafford legends George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
It is understood that the winter transfer window in Janauary would be difficult for Mourinho to make a major signing and it is believed that he would give his best to rope in Griezmann next summer – and it could be that Man Utd will have to go all season without a No.7.
Back in May, Griezmann had admitted that his chances of joining United were “six out of 10” and sources reveal that he is still open to talks for a switch to Old Trafford.
And with Atletico’s transfer ban expiring in January, the La Liga club would be able to rope in a replacement for their French superstar – with wantaway Chelsea star Diego Costa set to make a dramatic return to his former club.
