WHERE? WHEN? HOW?

Published on:

The European Football Championship has been taking place every four years since it was launched in 1960. The 2020 tournament, however, did not take place due to the disruption linked to the novel coronavirus. The tournament, which was due to take place from June 12 to July 12, 2020, was pushed back one year in the wake of the sweeping health crisis. The competition is still scheduled to take place in 2021, even though the virus is still a threat across the continent.

The UEFA Euro 2020 is one of the most anticipated events of the year, yet there’s still a lot of confusion surrounding the tournament. In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about Euro 2020 to help clear up some of that confusion.

WHEN DOES EURO 2020 KICK OFF?

The postponed Euro 2020 championship is poised to go ahead as planned this summer. The 24-nations, month-long competition kicks off on June 11 and ends on July 11.

WHICH TEAMS ARE PLAYING?

The Euro 2020 matches will consist of 24 teams and 51 games. All the football powerhouses in Europe, including world champions France, Portugal, Germany, Spain, England, and Italy, will feature in the competition after advancing in the qualifications. All 55 teams in Europe participated in the qualification process, and no nation was granted an automatic spot due to the pan-European staging of the tournament.

WHERE WILL EURO 2020 TAKE PLACE

The 16th UEFA European Championship will not be your typical Euro competition. Founded in 1960, the European football competition turned 60 last year. To commemorate the championship’s 60th birthday, Euro 2020 matches will be played in 12 cities and stadiums across the continent. The opening match between Italy and Turkey on June 11 will be played in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

Each of the 12 stadiums will host three group games and at least one last-16 or quarter-final game. In addition to the three group stage games, Wembley Stadium in London will also host two last-16 games as well as the semi-final and final matches of the tournament. The four quarter-final matches will be played in Munich, Rome, St Petersburg, and Baku.

HAS THE EURO 2020 FORMAT CHANGED?

How does the Euro 2020 competition work? Well, in terms of the format, not much has changed from the 2016 tournament. The competition will feature 24 teams divided into groups of four. The best two nations in each group will advance to the Round of 16 automatically. The four best third-placed teams will also progress to the knockout stage, and the remaining two teams and the fourth-placed teams will be eliminated.

WILL FANS BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND EURO 2020 MATCHES

While it’s unlikely that stadiums will be at full capacity, Euro 2020 matches will not be played in empty stadiums. UEFA stipulates that each host put on games with at least 25% capacity on the stands. This means that Euro 2020 matches in Wembley will be played with at least 17,000 fans in attendance. In Denmark, the government has confirmed that the games in Copenhagen will take place in front of at least 11,000 fans.

Cities that were unable to meet UEFA’s requirements lost their hosting rights for the Euro 2020 competition. Bilbao and Dublin, for instance, will not be hosting any Euro 2020 games despite being in the initial group of cities chosen to host the tournament. The two cities were unable to meet the European football governing body’s demands. Their matches have been relocated to Seville, St Petersburg, and London.

HOW CAN I WATCH EURO 2020?

With the current social distancing rules and travel restrictions, the coronavirus pandemic has made it extremely hard for local and international fans to attend Euro 2020 matches. No need to worry, though. You can watch live Euro 2020 matches from anywhere in the world. In the United Kingdom, you can watch Euro 2020 on BBC One and ITV for free. You can also catch Euro 2020 games on streaming services such as Sling TV, YouTube TV, and Hulu.

Covid-19 has had an unprecedented impact on the footballing world. The 2020 Euro tournament will be taking place this summer after it was pushed back a year due to the raging virus. However, thousands of football fans will not be able to attend Euro 2020 matches due to Covid-19. Fortunately, you can stream Euro 2020 matches from anywhere in the world.
